Black Hair and Story Telling as a Form of Social Activism

Lecture/Readings

Artist St. Clair Detrick-Jules will discuss what she learned through an almost four-year-long journey photographing and interviewing 101 Black women with natural hair for her photojournalism book, My Beautiful Black Hair: 101 Natural Hair Stories from the Sisterhood, a large-scale visual anthropology exploring the deep, complex relationships across generations between Black women and their hair that Kirkus Reviews calls “compelling and inspirational...a powerful celebration of self-acceptance and sisterhood.”

Enjoy a free lunch while gaining essential insights and strategies for crafting effective resumes and cover letters, and mastering interview techniques for your next internship or job! Session 1: 12:30-1:30 will focus on resumes and cover letters. Session 2: 1:30-2:30 will focus on interviewing. Students may attend one or both sessions. The workshop features Joseph Banks, a seasoned expert from the USU Career Design Center. Sponsored by the USU Institute of Government & Politics (IOGP) and the USU Career Design Center, this workshop is designed to equip students with the tools and knowledge needed to succeed in finding internships or jobs.

Trans Allies on Campus Training

Workshop/Training

Trans/Nonbinary Allies on Campus aims to increase awareness and understanding of our trans/nonbinary community and further understand specific trans/nonbinary issues while training participants to stand with, and advocate for trans/nonbinary individuals. Participants will gain a basic understanding of sex, sexuality, and gender and how these concepts perpetuate microaggressions, discrimination policies, and daily biases. Prepare to dispel some common myths, laugh, and leave with the understanding that there is much work to be done in our community and you are part of the solution. In June 2023, the United States Supreme Court eliminated race-based affirmative action at colleges and universities – a decades-long battle and an extension of the debate over diversity, equity, and inclusion on campuses across the country. So, where does the relationship between race and higher education go from here? In "Colorblind Universities and the Future of Higher Education," Dr. Brandon James Render provides historical context for the recent Supreme Court decision and the deeper implications it has for colleges and universities beyond admissions.
