The Emma Eccles Jones College of Education & Human Services presents the Evidence-Based Practice in Graduate Education Speaker Series. Dr. Barbara Sarnecka will be speaking on specific evidence-based interventions to improve graduate student writing through cascading mentoring. Dr. Sarnecka is the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research at the University of California Irvine School of Social Sciences and principal investigator for an Innovations in Graduate Education grant from the National Science Foundation. During the talk at noon, she will review evidence-based interventions and their impacts. At 2pm, Dr. Sarnecka will lead a roundtable to discuss strategies for the practical aspects of implementation within programs and departments in SCCE 209. Attendees can submit a reflection of their takeaways in the ETE10 course to earn the ETE Affiliated Events & Workshops engage-level digital badge. Students, Faculty, and Staff are encouraged to join. Please join us for our seventh coding workshop in our new coding workshop series on Tuesday March 14th from 3:00 - 5:00 PM MT in NR 217. This workshop is for folks who are interested in getting introduced to the basics of the cloud-based remote sensing platform Google Earth Engine (GEE). GEE is a powerful tool for research, providing access to massive open-source spatial datasets (e.g. satellite imagery, climate, topography, land use/landcover, among many others), with access to Google's high power computing resources to perform complex analyses. This workshop will cover: a) What is GEE and how does it differ from other GIS platforms? b) Intro to JavaScript and the GEE API c) Importing and visualizing a satellite image d) Importing, filtering, and visualizing image collections e) Accessing information about datasets

Chemistry Seminar Series: Sam Sternberg

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry presents "Discovery and development of CRISPR-associated transposases" with Sam Sternberg. Hosted by Ryan Jackson. Sam's doctoral and postdoctoral research focused on the mechanism of nucleic acid targeting by RNA-guided bacterial immune systems (CRISPR–Cas), especially CRISPR–Cas9, and on the development of these systems for genome engineering applications. More recently, his lab pioneered the discovery of CRISPR-associated transposons and their development for new methods of RNA-guided DNA integration. His lab employs a range of biochemical, biophysical, genetic, and structural techniques to investigate CRISPR and transposon biology, with an eye towards applying mechanistic knowledge for tool development.

This year's festival will feature the Reunion Trio with Bruce Forman (guitar), John Clayton (bass) and Jeff Hamilton (drums) along with Denmark-based vocalist and bassist Kristin Korb.
When guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Shelly Manne came together in 1956, they called their trio the Poll Winners—fitting, as each musician routinely topped DownBeat’s polls for their respective instrument. The five Poll Winners albums on the legendary jazz label Contemporary Records are classics that set the standard for every guitar trio that followed. Forman, Clayton and Hamilton will revisit the original trio’s musical legacy and create a beautiful homage to these extraordinary artists who inspired jazz audiences around the world.
Known for her hard swinging bass lines and sparkling vocals, Kristin Korb has established herself on the jazz stage as an exceptional artist, commanding both instruments with panache, engaging them simultaneously with an ease comparable to breathing. She will be performing with USU guitar professor Corey Christiansen, who was recently listed as one of the top 200 living jazz guitarists on allaboutjazz.com.

In September 2019, a study conducted at Harvard University was published. It focused on the response of students to different instructional approaches – specifically passive lecturing versus active learning. Based on prior research, the authors believed that students would learn more in active learning environments but they wanted to understand why so many students and faculty remain hesitant to switch to active learning. This Sparkshop workshop will discuss some of the findings of that study and offer several ideas and examples of ways to incorporate active learning strategies in a variety of classroom settings. It will also focus on group learning and how to facilitate dialogue, connection, exploration, and understanding among and between students.

CHaSS Research Workshop: Grant-Writing Charrette

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHaSS), the Office of Research, and USU Libraries will sponsor a grant-writing charrette - a hands-on, collaborative peer review session. Participation in the workshop is by application and is limited to 9 CHaSS faculty (at any rank or campus), including lecturers and post-docs. Women in Welding Workshop

NOTE: This workshop is now full. We will be offering more workshops soon!
Over the course of four sessions, participants will learn how to set up
a welder for GMAW/FCAW, apply basic troubleshooting techniques,
use basic shop tools and machinery, and will be introduced to
entry-level fabrication techniques. Students will complete a small
project by the end of the course to take home with them.
We are excited to educate and support women in the trades, and hope
you will join us for lots of fun and real-world learning!

The Tenuous Renaissance in Playscape Design In recent years, the U.S. has undergone a renaissance in playscape design. Those designing and commissioning playgrounds are increasingly moving away from static pole and platform structures that provide little play value and even less challenge. While safety is still one of the major drivers of playground design, there is an increasing understanding that not all risks can or should be limited--and some are beneficial. The adventure playground--where children build their own environments with hammers and saws--has made a bit of a comeback, and loose parts are being embraced on a wider scale. Innovative climbing features let children climb higher, farther, and in more social ways--while limiting falls from high places. And designers are increasingly bringing nature into playscapes--which has positive impacts on children's health and well-being. In this presentation, Daniel Jost will discuss the playscape renaissance taking place, some of the playscapes he documented as a writer at Landscape Architecture Magazine, and his own efforts to support thoughtful playscapes and outdoor learning environments.

Science Unwrapped: Croaky Shapeshifters

Inquiring minds of all ages are invited to Science Unwrapped, the public outreach program of USU's College of Science. Admission is free. Our March 17 speaker is USU biologist Molly Womack, who presents "Croaky Shapeshifters: How Frogs Shapeshift within a Lifetime and Across Millennia" at 7 pm in the Emert Auditorium (ESLC 130) of the Eccles Science Learning Center on the USU Logan campus. Dr. Womack will speak for about half an hour and then invite questions from the audience. Afterwards, enjoy refreshments and hands-on STEM learning activities provided by student and community groups in the ESLC atrium. Debussy in Sight and Sound: An Art + Piano Collaboration

Join piano majors and art majors in a collaboration featuring Debussy’s evocative Preludes for Piano, accompanied by original artwork inspired by each piece of music. Concertgoers can participate in a silent auction for the artwork and enjoy an interactive performance highlighting the sights and sounds of French impressionism.
Alumni Backcountry Ski Tour

Alumni! Come grab some backcountry turns with us! We will venture into the Bear River backcountry to seek out snow that you can't get to on a ski lift. Learn some of the basics of backcountry travel and safety. No backcountry experience is required but you must be comfortable riding double blue to black diamond resort terrain. Participants must be prepared for strenuous hiking. Backcountry touring skis or splitboard with skins are required and available to rent for an additional $20+tax for trip participants. NO SNOWSHOES. Trip cost includes transportation, avalanche beacon, shovel, probe and student leadership. Register at recportal.usu.edu

Early photographic surveys of the American West explored the physical territory; this portfolio examines the conceptual landscape of creative practice by photographic artists spanning the vast spaces of Utah. The artists have strong connections to the state and their images represent a diversity beyond geographic boundaries; they interrupt convention and draw new lines. Intended to serve as a document of a historical moment, this portfolio was created as
an act of generosity, especially through its inclusion of a younger generation of artists who represent not only the current state of photographic art, but also its future.

Do you have a passion for math and science?
Are you a female student in 9th, 10th, or 11th grade?
Do you want to learn how engineers are actively improving the world and the scientific community?
Then, Engineering Extravaganza is the event for you! Come spend a full day on Utah State University's campus with the Society of Women Engineers, and learn about how you can change the world!
Our day will consist of four main workshops, each one correlating to a department in the college of engineering (Mechanical and Aerospace, Electrical and Computer, Civil and Environmental, and Biological), a campus tour, and a lot of fun!
Parents or guardians are required for check-in and pick-up but are not needed for the duration of the event.
There are TWO submissions that need to be made for registration to be complete, the registration form and payment both need to be submitted, one submission button will not submit the other!

Join us as we help at Athletics United's winter indoor track meet! Athletics United brings kids, especially kids from refugee backgrounds, together through sport. These young runners have been working hard all winter to reach their goals, and we will be helping time their runs, measure their long jumps and shot put throws, and cheer them on to do their best.
