LAEP Speaker Series: Sean Michael

Lecture/Readings

Private practice in landscape architecture is highly competitive, with firms of many sizes and disciplines vying for the same contracts. For firms to survive in crowded, talent-rich markets, they must provide valuable design and planning services while maintaining the profitability of their office(s). Without exception, both of these demands must be met if a sustainable practice is sought. This talk explains the significance of business practices in the minds of practitioners, sharing results from a 2021 study of one of the oldest and most successful firms in North America.

CHaSS visit with Kevin White from Visa

Panel Discussion/Presentation

Logan native Kevin White earned his bachelor's degree from Utah State University in 1991, having double majored in JCOM and Spanish. Since then he has had a wide-ranging career with a variety of tech companies in Salt Lake and Utah Counties and currently serves as Director of Global Sales Development at Visa International in Lehi. Visa provides small companies around the world with a variety of services (including but not limited to payments). Their business is booming, and Kevin is very interested in raising awareness of opportunities for our students at his company. Kevin understands that many of our students would see a job ad at a financial institution and assume that it’s not for them – this assumption would be FALSE. Join us for an information session with Kevin for students, faculty, and staff this Friday, April 8th, at 1:00PM in the David B. Haight Alumni Center (food and beverages provided). While this will be a low-key opportunity to socialize and learn more about career options for CHaSS students, it could open the doors to real possibilities for graduates.

LAEP Speaker Series: Marc Ryan

Lecture/Readings

Lecture Title: Re-Grounding: The Practice of PUBLIC WORK About the Lecture: Marc will discuss the recent work of PUBLIC WORK, the studio he co-founded based in Toronto, Canada. Toronto has served as both a laboratory and inspiration for exploring the complex processes of building a city in which the public realm is central to its quality of life. The ambiguous identity of Toronto’s cityscape at the beginning of the 21st century leaves space for the re-articulation and design of the public realm, a chance to make source landscapes more vivid in the city and re-engage the civic imagination through landscape. In this talk, Marc will explore some of the themes which drive the work of the practice and share recent projects.

USU Bringing War Home Oral History & Roadshow

Cultural

Many of us are familiar with the material remains of war, whether we have direct experience with the battlefield or not. Some of these objects are personal, a way for veterans to preserve their experiences. Often, objects collected by relatives who have participated in the wars of the 20th and 21stcenturies linger on as memorials that help families tell the stories of how their beloved fathers, grandfathers, mothers and grandmothers, cousins, and siblings contributed to the larger history of war. The “Bringing War Home” project aims to enable our diverse community, military and civilian alike, to share their wartime objects and the stories that surround them. Working with community partners, we are preparing to host three full-day roadshows, where we invite the community to share family stories and to bring wartime objects for us to photograph and preserve in a digital archive (an online website where others can view and learn about these objects and their stories). One of our main goals is to create opportunities to engage veterans, military families, students, and communities in ongoing conversations on how objects can help us understand modern war.

Working at the Intersections: Critical Race Scholarship and Pedagogy Today

Panel Discussion/Presentation

Join USU's Center for Intersectional Gender Studies & Research and the USU Libraries for a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Christy Glass. This is the final event in the "Intersections on Inclusion" series for the 2021-2022 academic year. Recent conversations in Utah and nationwide highlight the debate and division surrounding Critical Race Theory (CRT) in education. The purpose of this event is to celebrate the ways CRT informs and deepens our teaching, research, and community engagement in higher education. Panelists will explore how they use CRT in the classroom and in their research, and discuss how doing so advances USU’s mission of “cultivating diversity of thought and culture" and “serving the public through learning, discovery, and engagement.” Join us for an engaging—and celebratory—discussion that will reenergize our shared purpose in this work and build connections across our university. This event will take place in a Zoom webinar format and will be live captioned. If you have additional accessibility needs or questions about the event, please contact Rachel.Wishkoski@usu.edu.

Making your 1000-Level Course a Place for Student Success

Workshop/Training

As a land-grant institution, part of our mission as a university is to provide access to learning for all. This means that many of our freshmen come to campus not adequately prepared with the study skills they need to succeed in college. As faculty, we often focus exclusively on content in our courses, or have expectations for student abilities that don't line up with the realities of their college preparation. In this presentation, you will learn about strategies for building college-readiness skills within your course, without compromising quality of instruction or losing core course content. Implementing these ideas will allow for better engagement with the course material, and greater student success both in your class and across the students' academic careers.

Mindfulness Meditation | Sitting in breath and presence

Recreation

FREE REGISTRATION: https://bit.ly/mindfulnessandmeditationweekly Mindfulness is a type of meditation in which you focus on being intensely aware of what you're sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgment. Practicing mindfulness involves breathing methods, guided imagery, and other practices to relax the body and mind and help reduce stress. Mindfulness meditation has been proven to support various health conditions - stress, anxiety, pain, depression, insomnia, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, and more - and help you experience thoughts and emotions with greater balance and acceptance, improve attentiveness, and relieve burnout. Practicing self care through mindfulness and meditation can help you relax and focus on what is most important - your overall wellness. This is a weekly, online wellness series hosted by the Utah State University Office of Health Equity and Community Engagement and Tribal & Rural Opioid Initiative Resource Center.

Modelling Parasite-Produced Marine diseases of immobile hosts: spatial vs non-spatial models

Conference/Seminar

Parasite-produced marine infectious diseases pose a substantial threat to marine ecosystems and the conservation of their biodiversity. Only recently, some models based on non-spatial descriptions have been proposed to describe this kind of epidemics. However, in realistic situations, epidemic transmission is conditioned by the spatial distribution of hosts, the parasites mobility patterns and the inherent stochasticity of the epidemic process. Here we developed a spatially-explicit individual-based model (IBM) for marine diseases of immobile hosts to investigate the impact of spatial disease transmission compared to the non-spatial counterpart.
