CCA Convocation with Gabriela Lena Frank

Arts/Entertainment

Currently serving as Composer-in-Residence with the storied Philadelphia Orchestra and included in the Washington Post's list of the most significant women composers in history (August, 2017), identity has always been at the center of composer/pianist Gabriela Lena Frank's music. Her music often reflects not only her own personal experience as a multi-racial Latina, but also refract her studies of Latin American cultures, incorporating poetry, mythology, and native musical styles into a western classical framework that is uniquely her own. (https://www.glfcam.com/people/gabriela, accessed August 23, 2023)

Dr. Frank has also founded the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music at her home and farm in the rural mountains of Mendocino County, California. Through this unique educational model, Dr. Frank provides professional mentorship to emerging composers from diverse musical and cultural backgrounds, guiding them to become artists who prioritize eco-conscious ways of making music as well as giving back to their community.

Dr. Frank’s appearance for this evening’s convocation lecture and tomorrow evening’s program of her music is the culmination of a 4-year residency in Utah State’s music department lead by the members of the Fry Street Quartet supported by the Marie Eccles Caine Foundation—Russell Family, the Tanner Trust for Universities, differential tuition provided by students of the college, and other generous donors.

Free to all; everyone welcome.

MUSES

Arts/Entertainment

The word "muse" describes a source of inspiration. This annual music therapy concert aims to highlight the multi-faceted sources of inspiration for USU music therapy students both personally and professionally. In our field of study, we often talk about “self as instrument”, or rather, being the instrument of change within the therapeutic relationship. During MUSES, we get to shift our focus to also celebrate our external musical skills and instruments as extensions of ourselves, and the tools by which we get to share creative self-expression with the world. Concert goers will enjoy original compositions in addition to contemporary and classical pieces that have been intentionally chosen to represent the experiences of our students and potential clinical applications of these works in music therapy practice. Additionally, attendees may have the opportunity to get involved first-hand with our interactive lobby experience before the performance. For more information, visit www.usumtsa.weebly.com.

What do our students deserve to learn? Which faculty have the responsibility-or the right-to teach each repertoire? And how, as a university, do we define the collective "us" we seek to serve?

LAEP Speaker Series: Mariana Rovzar

Lecture/Readings

Small Urban Gardens: Possibilities & Challenges About the Lecture: Developing a small-scale garden requires a vision that must answer a fundamental query: What does this space want to be? Speaker Bio: Mariana Rovzar is a Miami-based landscape architect who has meticulously cultivated a diverse portfolio of residential-scale gardens that transcend the ordinary.
