Dr. Armatas on his research:
My research centers around the intersection of ecosystems and climate change. In particular, I strive to understand the future of Earth’s forests in a changing climate. Massive mortality events of many tree species in the last decade prompt concerns that drought, insects, and wildfire may devastate forests in the coming decades. I study how drought and climate change affect forest ecosystems, including tree physiology, species interactions, carbon cycling, and biosphere-atmosphere feedbacks. This research spans a broad array of spatial scales from xylem cells to ecosystems and seeks to gain a better mechanistic understanding of how climate change will affect forests around the world.

AIARE II Avalanche Course
Recreation
The AIARE 2 is a three-day/24-hour course that provides backcountry travelers an opportunity to advance their decision making skills in more complicated situations such as being a leader within a small travel group, traveling in more complicated terrain, and/or developing a travel plan where online resources are scarce. The AIARE 2 builds on the introductory avalanche hazard management model introduced in the AIARE 1 and adds to it the evaluation of critical hazard assessment factors. Students will describe and discuss weather, snowpack and avalanche processes, and identify how these processes relate to observations and travel within avalanche terrain. Skis or splitboard with skins and touring bindings are required for this course. SNOWSHOES ARE NOT ALLOWED! Additionally, an avalanche beacon, shovel, and probe are required. These items are available to rent from the USU Outdoor Programs. Make sure to reserve equipment in advance as quantities are limited. Entrepreneur Leadership Series: Emily Peterson
Panel Discussion/Presentation
Emily Peterson is the CEO and co-founder of Saranoni Luxury Blankets. Emily and her husband, Nathan, started Saranoni to make money to allow her daughter to have surgery to correct the miroctia – a congenital condition that caused her to be born without a fully developed outer ear. Emily and Nathan worked on their business as they were raising three small children. As they created gift baskets that included clothes, shoes, and jewelry, they realized that people loved the baby blankets the most!
As their company grew, they knew they wanted to give back to less fortunate families throughout the world. Through their social give-back initiative, Saranoni Cares, they have blessed many families in West Africa, Syria, and Cambodia.
In 2022, Nathan tragically passed away from stage 4 Gliboblastoma Mulitforme. Through this difficult time, Emily and her family have continued to grow the legacy of Saranoni. Emily echo’s Nathan’s passion for service and connection and is dedicated to growing Sara- noni. Her mission is to bring comfort, warmth, and connection to individuals and families.
Jazz Jams
Arts/Entertainment
An eagerly awaited tradition around the Music Department is our series of monthly jam sessions, in which a guest artist (or two or three) from outside Cache Valley visits to perform jazz standards with USU students and community members in a relaxed environment. Come and sit in on a tune, or just sit back, relax, and enjoy the music. Jam sessions are completely unscripted, so you never know what exactly will happen, but it’s great fun watching musicians perform without a net!
