Your Syllabus Matters: Creating a Sense of Belonging on Day 1

Faculty who attend this 60-minute seminar will learn about and implement evidence-based change to their syllabi to help better students start their course with a sense of belonging and self-efficacy. In particular, we will focus on ways the syllabus can more effectively communicate care, a growth mindset, inclusivity, and information about resources Please bring a laptop and have a syllabus selected for review.

49th Annual Honors Last Lecture

The University Honors Program presents the 49th Annual Honors Last Lecture, featuring Dr. Laura Gelfand, Distinguished Professor of Art History in Caine College of the Arts. Honors students nominated and interviewed faculty, selecting Dr. Gelfand as the 2024 Honors Outstanding Professor. The title of Dr. Gelfand’s lecture is “The Future is Unwritten: Be Passionate.”

Setting the Tone for Semester-Long Student Participation by Changing up the First Day of Class

Do you sometimes find students reluctant to participate in your course in spite of your best efforts and charming personality? Come attend this Sparkshop to learn a way to start the semester in a way that sets a positive tone for your course and engenders student buy-in from the beginning by collaboratively establishing classroom norms on the first day of class. (I know and I get it, class time is a precious commodity. In my experience, this practice has paid off in spades throughout the semester.)
Introduction to Student Success

Student success is core to our land-grant teaching mission at USU, where we are committed to helping students from a wide range of backgrounds be successful. Participants in this 2-hour seminar will be introduced to the culture and context of teaching for student success at USU. Faculty will learn about best practices to facilitate student success and academic belonging in their classes as well as gain familiarity with the range of supports that are available to students and faculty.
