Best Practices in Anti-Racist Scholarly Review
Workshop/Training
Most articles in academic journals go through a process of scholarly review, where peers in the field give feedback on the article and recommend it to be accepted, revised, or rejected by the publisher. While this review process is considered a pillar of academic scholarship, it is also a potential gatekeeping mechanism that can re-inscribe racism, sexism, classism, and other forms of oppression. In this workshop, participants will engage in the most recent scholarship on best practices in peer review, which emphasizes the need for reviewers to explicitly reject oppressive publication practices and advocate for historically marginalized authors and audiences. Participants can expect to learn about approaches to anti-racist reviewing, practice implementing those approaches, and create a community of inquiry with other graduate students. This workshop is recommended for graduate students who want a better understanding of the peer review process and what the role of a reviewer entails. Previous experience reviewing is not required.
LAEP Speaker Series: Brent Chamberlain
Panel Discussion/Presentation
Time and again, I am struck by the significance of knowledge, how it was obtained, why it is inspired and how much more there is to know. In this presentation, I offer a glimpse into how statistical and inferential models can be used to help designers create more functional and aesthetic designs. To do this, we will journey through distinct research endeavors that can guide us toward creating places to improve memory, engage the affective senses, relay complex information and most importantly think about how we design and plan our future. Be ready to be immersed in visuals from the 2D mundane to the symphonic of bizarre VR. Whether you are aware of how (the lack of) inference does or does not influence your creative process, I hope this will inspire an approach toward generating and using knowledge in design.
