Dr. Armatas on his research:
My research centers around the intersection of ecosystems and climate change. In particular, I strive to understand the future of Earth’s forests in a changing climate. Massive mortality events of many tree species in the last decade prompt concerns that drought, insects, and wildfire may devastate forests in the coming decades. I study how drought and climate change affect forest ecosystems, including tree physiology, species interactions, carbon cycling, and biosphere-atmosphere feedbacks. This research spans a broad array of spatial scales from xylem cells to ecosystems and seeks to gain a better mechanistic understanding of how climate change will affect forests around the world.

Aggies Walk the Walk
Special Event
Students, faculty, staff, and community members (led by USU Athletics) will silently walk from the USU Quad, down the Hello Walk, to the Wayne Estes Center to support MLK week. We do this walk on special occasions: luminary, graduation, and MLK week. The Walk is also a public way for a public service institution to help us reflect on our civic responsibility—both individually and collectively—toward the common good of every member of the Aggie Family, Cache Valley, and other communities throughout the state of Utah (more on our commitment to civic responsibility can be found in our strategic plan: Aggie Action, objective 3.4). Once we arrive at the Wayne Estes Center, we will play a 2-minute video highlighting the week’s significance. After the video, we will hear from USU Athletics leadership, USU President, and student leadership on the importance of MLK week at USU (15 to 25 minutes long). We will then encourage people to attend the Aggie Men’s Basketball game.
Michelle Broadment's Alumna Recital
Arts/Entertainment
Soprano Michelle Broadbent Hatch, a seasoned performer across four continents, holds performance degrees from Utah State University and Brigham Young University. Currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Opera Performance at Arizona State University, she has been a long-time student of Darrell Babidge from the Juilliard School. Hatch also studied with baritone Gordon Hawkins at Arizona State University, Oberlin Conservatory in Italy, and with Daniel Ferro from the Juilliard School. In addition to numerous guest recitalist appearances, she has taken on leading roles in various operas, including Moore’s "The Ballad of Baby Doe," Menotti’s "The Old Maid and the Thief," Vaughan Williams’ "Riders to the Sea," de Falla’s "La Vida Breve," Smetana’s "The Bartered Bride," and the title role in Puccini’s "Suor Angelica."
As the recipient of several scholarships and awards, including BYU Singer of the Year and the Outstanding Opera Performance Award, Hatch triumphed in the Concerto Competition at both of her alma maters and was a district winner in the Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions.
On Jan. 20, Hatch will showcase her favorite arias and art songs, featuring works by Faure, Brahms, Schuman, and Puccini. The recital will also include new repertoire by Mark Adamo, Ricky Ian Gordon, and Jonathan Dove, among others. This performance marks the culmination of her doctoral studies at ASU and is the final installment of a three-part recital series.
