Alumni Exhibition Tiana Godfrey and Tiny Houses
Exhibition
The opening exhibition of the academic year features paintings created by Art+Design BFA alumni Tiana Godfrey along with Tiny Houses created by students in the Interior Architecture and Design Program. The Tiny Houses assignment is a component of the Architectural Graphics and CADD courses, and the project outline is simple: design a small residence for two people, approximately 500 sqft per level. The residence must have more than one level, be built in Utah, and meet all residential building codes. The students create presentation drawings, a three-dimensional model, set of construction documents, and interior and exterior renderings of their custom design.

Research Lecture with Andrea Baldwin
Lecture/Readings
In her 2022 book, A Decolonial Black Feminist Theory of Reading and Shade: Feeling the University, Andrea Baldwin uses Black and decolonial feminist theorizing along with a queer of color critique to examine the university as an affective space. This space often causes marginalized and minoritized individuals to feel out of place and out of time. Baldwin developed the concept of “Shad(e)y theoretics” to encapsulate this idea.In this presentation, Baldwin builds on her theorizing to offer insights into the current moment in US politics. She explores the seemingly easy cooptation and, in some cases, cooperation of university administration in erasing marginalized and minoritized communities and their scholarship. While this erasure is not unexpected from a decolonial perspective, it remains deeply painful. Using indigenous feminist and Black feminist ecological thought, Baldwin provides thoughts on how to navigate the current epistemic and affective violence experienced by Black, brown, indigenous, and queer scholars in the US academy.

FSQ at USU Series: Nature’s Resonance
Arts/Entertainment
We’re thrilled to open our season with the world premiere of "Arboreal," a new work written for the Fry Street Quartet by celebrated composer Laura Kaminsky. Thirteen years and over 60 performances ago, Kaminsky composed the string quartet "Rising Tide" for the FSQ, anchoring their multi-disciplinary project on global sustainability titled "Rising Tide: The Crossroads Project." In this new work, Kaminsky delves into a sonic exploration of trees — their character, processes, beauty and the vital role they play in sustaining life on Earth. This evocative piece promises to be a powerful and moving experience, setting the tone for a season that reflects on our relationship with the natural world.
