Arrington Mormon History Lecture Presented by Laurie Maffly-Kipp
Lecture/Readings
“’A Marvelous Work’: Reading Mormonism in West Africa”
Two decades before the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began official missionary work in West Africa, pamphlets, books, and other church materials had been circulating among Christians in Nigeria and Ghana. Brought by seekers who had studied abroad or encountered church members from other countries, those texts formed the basis for a Mormon community outside the bounds of U.S. institutional authority or oversight. What did this “native” Mormonism look like, and how did believers craft churches out of the bare materials of tracts and inspirational volumes? This talk explores the circulation and interpretation of this homegrown Mormon faith in the 1960s and 1970s, and concludes with the dilemmas raised by this religious self-fashioning for LDS Church establishment after 1978.
2021 Leonard J. Arrington Mormon History Lecture Series
Lecture/Readings
Dr. Laurie Maffly-Kipp will present “A Marvelous Work: Reading Mormonism in West Africa” as part of the USU University Libraries’ Leonard J. Arrington Mormon History Lecture series. Maffly-Kipp’s lecture will discuss how the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pamphlets, books and other church materials circulated in West Africa two decades before offical missionary work began, leading to a unique “native” Mormonism. Believers crafted churches from these bare materials and doctrinal interpretations during the 1960s and 1970s.
The lecture will be held at the Newel & Jean Daines Concert Hall at 7 p.m. and will also be broadcasted live at youtube.com/USULibraries. It is free and open to the public.

A New Normal in Inclusive, Usable Online Learning Experiences
Workshop/Training
One consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic has been more students accessing content remotely, without access to the technology and other resources available on campus. Students from underrepresented groups have been disproportionately affected, something that is not unique to COVID, of course. However, this crisis has provided opportunities to create a new normal of inclusive content delivery, where focusing on the needs of students from the margins will benefit all students.
Providing usable and accessible content through online learning management systems is a challenge, but there are ways forward. For this seminar, we will discuss two specific accessibility practices that provide a model for delivering more inclusive and usable instructional materials: (1) conversion of PDF Content to HTML Content and (2) creating captions for instructional videos.

Mindfulness is a type of meditation in which you focus on being intensely aware of what you're sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgment. Practicing mindfulness involves breathing methods, guided imagery, and other practices to relax the body and mind and help reduce stress. Mindfulness meditation has been proven to support various health conditions - stress, anxiety, pain, depression, insomnia, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, and more - and help you experience thoughts and emotions with greater balance and acceptance, improve attentiveness, and relieve burnout.
Practicing self care through mindfulness and meditation can help you relax and focus on what is most important - your overall wellness. This is a weekly, online wellness series hosted by the Utah State University Office of Health Equity and Community Engagement and Tribal & Rural Opioid Initiative Resource Center.

How Women Rise: Break the 12 Habits Holding You Back from Your Next Raise, Promotion, or Job
Panel Discussion/Presentation
Women’s distinctive strengths and behaviors provide them with many advantages. Yet the very habits that help them early in their careers can hold them back as they seek to rise. In this virtual seminar, Sally Helgesen draws on her work with legendary executive coach Marshall Goldsmith to help women identify and address the habits most likely to get in their way as they seek to move to a higher level. Using vivid real-life examples that resonate and inspire, Sally helps participants:
- Identify how specific habits may hinder them as they move to a higher level.
- Initiate simple behavioral changes that can smooth their path going forward.
- Hold themselves accountable for changes that can benefit them and their organizations.
- Become a more powerful resource for other women seeking to rise.
Participants will come away from this forum with an enhanced understanding of their individual strengths, an actionable template for identifying and addressing challenges going forward, a proven means for enlisting support, and tools for enhancing their visibility and connections.
Registration required to attend.
