The opening exhibition of the academic year features paintings created by Art+Design BFA alumni Tiana Godfrey along with Tiny Houses created by students in the Interior Architecture and Design Program. The Tiny Houses assignment is a component of the Architectural Graphics and CADD courses, and the project outline is simple: design a small residence for two people, approximately 500 sqft per level. The residence must have more than one level, be built in Utah, and meet all residential building codes. The students create presentation drawings, a three-dimensional model, set of construction documents, and interior and exterior renderings of their custom design.

In this session, we will hear perspectives from our federal partners, the NPS, BLM, and USFS, the certified land assets from which dark sky visitorship and tourism flow, including a discussion about the partnerships between public land entities, gateway communities, and nearby tribal nations can each benefit when parks and communities are dark-sky certified.

Rakes and Shovels Volunteer Recruitment

Come learn about Rakes and Shovels Volunteer Opportunities! Provide free leaf-raking and snow-shoveling services for senior citizens and community members with disabilities. Register yourself, your roommates/household, or your organization to be volunteers! After registering, you will be matched with a resident who has requested help. If you feel like raking leaves, we're expecting you to find a group who can assist you (unless you like raking by yourself). The COSAS has rakes for check out in TSC 316A. If you feel like shoveling snow, you're signing up for a commitment to a resident for the duration of the snowy season. We will spend Friday and Saturday nights around the fire and raft the thrilling rapids of the Alpine section of the Snake River. Participants must be able to swim. Trip cost includes food, transportation, permit fees, rafting equipment, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad and student leadership.

Join us for our USU Campus Recreation Welcome Week Color Run taking place on Saturday, September 7th at 9am! This will be a 2mi fun run/walk that you can do with your friends to be able to see more of campus while getting mixed up with colored chalk that will be thrown at you throughout the course. You will get a shirt at check-in along with snacks at the end when you finish on the QUAD! Please note, shirt sizes will not be promised as it will be first come first serve. Hope to see you there!

They have a different vocabulary, a different alphabet, but you learn how to read them.” In this talk, we will read that story from places like the Book Cliffs, the San Rafael Swell, the Colorado Plateau, and more, to understand the ancient geologic foundation of eastern Utah.

Inquiring minds of all ages are invited to Science Unwrapped, the public STEM outreach program of USU's College of Science. Learning scientist Hillary Swanson, assistant professor in USU's Department of Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences, presents "How Do We Learn and How Should We Teach?" at 7 pm in the Emert Auditorium (ESLC 130) of the Eccles Science Learning Center on the USU campus, Logan. Admission is free. Refreshments and hands-on learning activities follow Dr. Swanson's talk. Talk Description: "The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking,” said celebrated physicist Albert Einstein. It’s a favorite quote of learning scientist Hillary Swanson, who explores how engaging in scientific practices helps students refine common sense and everyday thinking into scientific understanding. Collaborating with USU physicists and computer scientists, along with Cache County teachers, Dr. Swanson designs classroom science activities that help students transform daydreams into big ideas. Dr. Swanson's talk is part of Science Unwrapped's Fall 2024 "Joining Forces" series.

Welcome to another exciting Natural Resources Field Days! We are excited to engage the cache valley 4th grade students in understanding the Water, Soils, Plants, and Wildlife of the Logan River watershed ecosystem. Students and their teachers spend the day at Spring Hollow Campground on the Cache National Forest, rotating through four stations and learning about wildlife, soils, plants, and water quality. We have approximately 2,000-2,500 students participate each year!

Research Lecture with Andrea Baldwin

In her 2022 book, A Decolonial Black Feminist Theory of Reading and Shade: Feeling the University, Andrea Baldwin uses Black and decolonial feminist theorizing along with a queer of color critique to examine the university as an affective space. This space often causes marginalized and minoritized individuals to feel out of place and out of time. Baldwin developed the concept of “Shad(e)y theoretics” to encapsulate this idea.In this presentation, Baldwin builds on her theorizing to offer insights into the current moment in US politics. She explores the seemingly easy cooptation and, in some cases, cooperation of university administration in erasing marginalized and minoritized communities and their scholarship. While this erasure is not unexpected from a decolonial perspective, it remains deeply painful. Using indigenous feminist and Black feminist ecological thought, Baldwin provides thoughts on how to navigate the current epistemic and affective violence experienced by Black, brown, indigenous, and queer scholars in the US academy.

Learning through hands-on experience is the best way to learn! We will be hosting multiple skills nights this semester to gain hands on experience through the National Cyber League (NCL) practice "gym". Our amazing ACES will work groups to focus on networks, reverse engineering, digital forensics, and more. The NCL practice game starts October 14 (in 3 weeks!) and is for everyone from beginners with zero cyber experience to people with years of experience. See you Wednesday! September 25 - 7pm - HH 360

This concert will feature the Caine Jazz Combo, a guest artist, and jazz students from the Music Department performing standard jazz tunes. The jam session is open to everyone, and attendees are encouraged to bring their instruments and join in. Jam sessions take place on the Hub Stage on the first floor of the Taggart Student Center, near the food court.

We’re thrilled to open our season with the world premiere of "Arboreal," a new work written for the Fry Street Quartet by celebrated composer Laura Kaminsky. Thirteen years and over 60 performances ago, Kaminsky composed the string quartet "Rising Tide" for the FSQ, anchoring their multi-disciplinary project on global sustainability titled "Rising Tide: The Crossroads Project." In this new work, Kaminsky delves into a sonic exploration of trees — their character, processes, beauty and the vital role they play in sustaining life on Earth. This evocative piece promises to be a powerful and moving experience, setting the tone for a season that reflects on our relationship with the natural world.

We are heading down south near Moab to spend the weekend playing on the Colorado River in the Moab area. We will enjoy our nights camped in beautiful red rock country while we paddle the rapids of the Moab Daily section. Participants must be able to swim and prepared for fun on the water. Trip cost includes: food, transportation, campground fees, river equipment, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad and student leadership.

Alumni Exhibition Tiana Godfrey and Tiny Houses

The opening exhibition of the academic year features paintings created by Art+Design BFA alumni Tiana Godfrey along with Tiny Houses created by students in the Interior Architecture and Design Program. The Tiny Houses assignment is a component of the Architectural Graphics and CADD courses, and the project outline is simple: design a small residence for two people, approximately 500 sqft per level. The residence must have more than one level, be built in Utah, and meet all residential building codes. The students create presentation drawings, a three-dimensional model, set of construction documents, and interior and exterior renderings of their custom design.

How does a rare, historic book become a piece of 21st-century edible art? Join Ella Hawkins as she creates a new biscuit (cookie) design based on an early printed book from USU’s special collections. As well as demonstrating this design process, Ella will look back at her past biscuit sets and discuss the unique qualities of printed texts from different periods. Ella Hawkins is a Shakespeare scholar, design historian, and artist. She shares her fascination with design by creating edible art inspired by historical textiles, objects, and costumes, working with cultural institutions including the British Library, Jane Austen’s House, and Milton’s Cottage. She is a Senior Lecturer at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and the author of Shakespeare in Elizabethan Costume: ‘Period Dress’ in Twenty-First Century Performance.

Contemporary Legends in a Polarized World (Derek Agard Distinguished Lecture)

In a country where trust is at an all-time low and polarization at an all-time high, is everything a legend? Using examples of contemporary or “urban” legends from across the US, Tom Mould, Professor of Anthropology and Folklore (Butler University), explores new approaches to legend research that help us navigate our current landscape of fake news, conspiracy theories, and echo chambers. In the process, Professor Mould upends some long held beliefs about what contemporary legends are, what they do, and what they can tell us about ourselves and the polarized world we live in.

Jontrell graduated in 2019 with his bachelor's in Political Science and Sociology, going on to earn a Master's in Business Administration in 2020. A former athlete with the Cleveland Browns and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Jontrell now leverages his experience as a Senior Business Consultant for the I-System Institute and focuses on mental performance and wellness. From Propagation to Planning, How Restorative One Health Design Approaches Can Scale Site Based Interventions to Regional Scale Solutions MASS Design Group was founded on the understanding that design has a critical role to play in supporting communities to confront history, shape new narratives, collectively heal and project new possibilities for the future. In the face of a changing climate and rapid rates of biodiversity loss, holistic place based solutions are needed that cross disciplinary boundaries and catalyze action. Through our One Health work we have explored how restorative design approaches can scale from site based applications to regional scale solutions. This session will highlight these possibilities and discuss how collaborative partnerships can expand design approaches towards research based methodologies, sustainability, community benefit, and resilience.

Tickets can be bought online or at the fairgrounds. Student tickets are $5 w/student ID! Dates are Friday, September 27th with a 7pm start and Saturday, September 28th with a 7pm start. Located at the Cache County Fairgrounds.

Concerts are part of the band large ensemble curriculum. As capstone events, they typically occur twice per semester. Students are required to participate in these events as a large part of their grades, and these concerts are the culmination of several weeks of classroom rehearsals.
