We are heading up to the Snake River near Jackson Wyoming for a weekend of rafting and camping. We will spend Friday and Saturday nights around the fire and raft the thrilling rapids of the Alpine section of the Snake River. Participants must be able to swim. Trip cost includes food, transportation, permit fees, rafting equipment, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad and student leadership.
Color Run
Recreation
Join us for our USU Campus Recreation Welcome Week Color Run taking place on Saturday, September 7th at 9am! This will be a 2mi fun run/walk that you can do with your friends to be able to see more of campus while getting mixed up with colored chalk that will be thrown at you throughout the course. You will get a shirt at check-in along with snacks at the end when you finish on the QUAD! Please note, shirt sizes will not be promised as it will be first come first serve. Hope to see you there!

542 Million Years in a Flash: Eastern Utah’s Geologic Foundation

John McPhee once described rocks as “…books. They have a different vocabulary, a different alphabet, but you learn how to read them.” In this talk, we will read that story from places like the Book Cliffs, the San Rafael Swell, the Colorado Plateau, and more, to understand the ancient geologic foundation of eastern Utah.

Inquiring minds of all ages are invited to Science Unwrapped, the public STEM outreach program of USU's College of Science. Learning scientist Hillary Swanson, assistant professor in USU's Department of Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences, presents "How Do We Learn and How Should We Teach?" at 7 pm in the Emert Auditorium (ESLC 130) of the Eccles Science Learning Center on the USU campus, Logan. Admission is free. Refreshments and hands-on learning activities follow Dr. Swanson's talk. Talk Description: "The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking,” said celebrated physicist Albert Einstein. It’s a favorite quote of learning scientist Hillary Swanson, who explores how engaging in scientific practices helps students refine common sense and everyday thinking into scientific understanding. Collaborating with USU physicists and computer scientists, along with Cache County teachers, Dr. Swanson designs classroom science activities that help students transform daydreams into big ideas. Dr. Swanson's talk is part of Science Unwrapped's Fall 2024 "Joining Forces" series.

Welcome to another exciting Natural Resources Field Days! We are excited to engage the cache valley 4th grade students in understanding the Water, Soils, Plants, and Wildlife of the Logan River watershed ecosystem. Students and their teachers spend the day at Spring Hollow Campground on the Cache National Forest, rotating through four stations and learning about wildlife, soils, plants, and water quality. We have approximately 2,000-2,500 students participate each year!

USU Be Well and Aetna, USU's Employee Assistance Program present a lunch and learn on the perils of procrastination and perfectionism. Is there a project you know you should start but can’t just seem to get started? Perhaps you heard the expression “Do it right or don’t do it at all”. This back and forth can create increased anxiety and stress which further complicates the problem. This training will explore the definitions and root causes of procrastination and perfectionism, discuss myths and truths behind this dynamic, and review tips to tame procrastination and perfectionism. *Presentation will not be recorded. We are heading north across the border to the City of Rocks National Preserve to climb and camp. We will spend our days exploring and climbing some of the amazing routes in the City and our evenings around the camp fire. No climbing experience is necessary for this trip and all abilities are welcome. Participants must be prepared for overnight camping, moderate hiking and heights. The trip cost includes transportation, food, camping fees, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent, group climbing equipment and shoes, helmet and harness. Space is limited, so register today!

The goal of this day is to celebrate all faculty and staff by providing some food, fun, and formal recognition for all you do for USU and our students. We’re thrilled to open our season with the world premiere of "Arboreal," a new work written for the Fry Street Quartet by celebrated composer Laura Kaminsky. Thirteen years and over 60 performances ago, Kaminsky composed the string quartet "Rising Tide" for the FSQ, anchoring their multi-disciplinary project on global sustainability titled "Rising Tide: The Crossroads Project." In this new work, Kaminsky delves into a sonic exploration of trees — their character, processes, beauty and the vital role they play in sustaining life on Earth. This evocative piece promises to be a powerful and moving experience, setting the tone for a season that reflects on our relationship with the natural world.

Tanner Talk Series | Biscuits and Botany: Transforming the Early Modern Book

How does a rare, historic book become a piece of 21st-century edible art? Join Ella Hawkins as she creates a new biscuit (cookie) design based on an early printed book from USU’s special collections. As well as demonstrating this design process, Ella will look back at her past biscuit sets and discuss the unique qualities of printed texts from different periods. Ella Hawkins is a Shakespeare scholar, design historian, and artist. She shares her fascination with design by creating edible art inspired by historical textiles, objects, and costumes, working with cultural institutions including the British Library, Jane Austen’s House, and Milton’s Cottage. She is a Senior Lecturer at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and the author of Shakespeare in Elizabethan Costume: ‘Period Dress’ in Twenty-First Century Performance.
Contemporary Legends in a Polarized World (Derek Agard Distinguished Lecture)

In a country where trust is at an all-time low and polarization at an all-time high, is everything a legend? Using examples of contemporary or “urban” legends from across the US, Tom Mould, Professor of Anthropology and Folklore (Butler University), explores new approaches to legend research that help us navigate our current landscape of fake news, conspiracy theories, and echo chambers. In the process, Professor Mould upends some long held beliefs about what contemporary legends are, what they do, and what they can tell us about ourselves and the polarized world we live in.

From Propagation to Planning, How Restorative One Health Design Approaches Can Scale Site Based Interventions to Regional Scale Solutions MASS Design Group was founded on the understanding that design has a critical role to play in supporting communities to confront history, shape new narratives, collectively heal and project new possibilities for the future. In the face of a changing climate and rapid rates of biodiversity loss, holistic place based solutions are needed that cross disciplinary boundaries and catalyze action. Through our One Health work we have explored how restorative design approaches can scale from site based applications to regional scale solutions. This session will highlight these possibilities and discuss how collaborative partnerships can expand design approaches towards research based methodologies, sustainability, community benefit, and resilience.

Watershed scientist Patrick Belmont, professor in USU's Department of Watershed Sciences, presents "Can We Live the Good Life and Keep Our Planet Healthy?" at 7 pm in the Emert Auditorium (ESLC 130) of the Eccles Science Learning Center on the USU campus, Logan. We will briefly discuss the process students must follow when submitting an academic record adjustment. This petition provides students the opportunity to request changes to their academic transcript (credit adjustment, course addition, withdrawal with "W" notation, etc.) because of an extenuating circumstance. An extenuating circumstance is a non-academic emergency outside of the student’s control that occurred during the semester for which the student is petitioning and affected the student’s ability to attend or fully participate in classes.

USU Be Well and Aetna, USU's Employee Assistance Program present a lunch and learn on supporting family members with mental health issues. Do you have a family member with a mental health problem? What can you do to support them but also take care of yourself? This training is not designed to provide specific diagnostic information or help identify mental health issues but it will give participants tools to cope with the strain of helping a loved one with mental illness. We’ll discuss the definition of mental illness, the impact of mental illness on families, tips to support others, ways to cope with a mental health crisis, and tools for self-care. *Presentation will not be recorded. Attendance and participation in this event will qualify as an activity for the Be Well Rewards program.*

2024 Arrington Mormon History Lecture: Jana Riess
Lecture/Readings
Join Jana Riess, author and senior columnist for Religious News Service, for a lecture at the Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall on October 10. When the first Next Mormons Survey was conducted in 2016, a key finding was that Latter-day Saint women in the U.S. were, on average, more certain in their beliefs about God, Jesus, and the church than LDS men. That may well be changing. Dr. Riess will unpack the 2022-23 Next Mormons Survey’s findings about LDS women and religiosity, placing them in the larger context of the shifting American religious landscape.

Through study of calligraphy with Zen master Hodo Tobase, the artist also learned that they were the fastest lines one could make. The Caine College of the Arts presents the Utah State University Symphony Orchestra's first concert of the 2024-25 season on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. in the Daines Concert Hall.
The concert, titled "Home Is Where the Heart Is," will be conducted by the USU Symphony Orchestra's new conductor, Daniel Alfred Wachs. It will feature members of the Department of Music wind and brass faculty in an all-American program, including Samuel Barber's haunting "Knoxville: Summer of 1915," performed by guest artist and Metropolitan Opera star soprano Janai Brugger. Also featured will be Aaron Copland's iconic "Appalachian Spring" in its version for full orchestra.
"It is a thrill and an honor for me to be joining the Caine College of the Arts faculty," Wachs says. He comes to Logan from Vienna, Austria. "There is so much talent between my faculty colleagues and our incredible students that I was inspired to find a way to present both. This all-American program of 20th-century composers also allows me to honor educators, including two of my own, Otto-Werner Mueller and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Jennifer Higdon."

We are heading down south near Moab to spend a long weekend rock climbing the beautiful sandstone desert walls. At night we will relax at the campground and enjoy the evenings by the fire. Trip cost includes sales tax, food, transportation, climbing equipment, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent and student leadership.

We are heading down south to hike and bike the world renown desert red rock in the Moab area. We will spend the weekend exploring some of the amazing mountain biking trails while camping near Moab. Participants must be in good physical condition and prepared for moderate to strenuous biking in a desert environment. No prior experience necessary, beginners are most welcome. Participants are encouraged to bring their own mountain bike (in good working condition) or a rental is available from the OP for no additional cost. Sizes and quantities are limited. Trip cost includes sales tax, mountain bike (if needed), food, transportation, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent and student leadership.

According to the Harvard Business Review article How to Become More Comfortable with Change, “too many of us have the mindset that ‘change is temporary.’ When you see something as temporary, you tend to cope with it instead of accept it — and if you don’t learn how to accept, embrace, and work through your discomfort in unfamiliar situations, you will inevitably find it difficult to progress in the rapidly evolving world of work.” The goal is to learn how to manage our own unique response to change and embrace it. The word "muse" describes a source of inspiration. This annual music therapy concert aims to highlight the multi-faceted sources of inspiration for USU music therapy students both personally and professionally. In our field of study, we often talk about “self as instrument”, or rather, being the instrument of change within the therapeutic relationship. During MUSES, we get to shift our focus to also celebrate our external musical skills and instruments as extensions of ourselves, and the tools by which we get to share creative self-expression with the world. Concert goers will enjoy original compositions in addition to contemporary and classical pieces that have been intentionally chosen to represent the experiences of our students and potential clinical applications of these works in music therapy practice. November 9 (at NEHMA): Margaret Bruton Terrazzo Art Along with her two sisters Esther and Helen, Margaret Bruton left her native San Francisco to study at the Art Students’ League in NYC. Known collectively as the “Famous Bruton Sisters”, they were part of the Bohemian Renaissance in early twentieth-century San Francisco. Make a terrazzo inspired art piece with us to celebrate Bruton and her work, Untitled, featured in our museum.

Data scientist John Lawson, research assistant professor in USU's Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the Bingham Research Center at USU Uintah Basin, presents "A.I. is an Astounding Innovation, but Can We Trust It?" at 7 pm in the Emert Auditorium (ESLC 130) of the Eccles Science Learning Center on the USU campus, Logan. Admission is free. Refreshments and hands-on learning activities follow Dr. Lawson's talk. Talk Description: Artificial intelligence – AI – captures our imaginations with its rocketing innovation and surging accessibility. AI-generated text, video, images and voices seem like magic, yet can also be a wolf in sheep’s clothing with incorrect and misleading information. How do we harness this amazing tool, while curbing potential harm? Data scientist John Lawson, who uses AI to predict weather hazards, explores what it means, and the diverse skills, knowledge and precautions needed, to create trustworthy AI. In this session we will cover the challenging task of how to be a caring supporter of students while setting healthy boundaries and attending to your own self-care. We will do exercises to increase intentionality and consistency in boundary setting; consider our verbal and nonverbal boundary cue behaviors; play a Kahoot game to see if we’re merging into the therapist lane; do active script work for responding to struggling students; and consider personal “policies” for maximizing student support and healthy boundary setting. We will also discuss how to refer to which resources when small and big mental health issues arise.

13,000+ Years of Indigenous History in Eastern Utah
Lecture/Readings
Eastern Utah is well-known for the spectacular rock art found in places like Nine Mile Canyon and the Puebloan architecture of Bears Ears National Monument and other landscapes. But the stories of the indigenous people who have called this land home for millennia are also preserved in much less notable sites that reflect the ephemera of daily activities such as cooking a meal or making a tool. Join Dr. Tim Riley as he explores the material history of this landscape with a focus on how we can learn more about people from the objects they left behind and how we can visit these places today with minimal impact and maximal respect.
Part of USU Eastern's "From the Book Cliffs to Blanding: A Panoramic View of Eastern Utah," come hear Eastern Prehistoric Museum Director Tim Riley talk about the first human inhabitants of Eastern Utah.

Research on Capitol Hill
Exhibition
Research on Capitol Hill (ROCH) is an annual celebration of undergraduate research and creative pursuits. Students have the opportunity to show policy-makers how innovative and impactful their research is and how important the state’s support is to continue conducting such exciting work. From projects on drought-tolerant plants to performance anxiety, self-charging car batteries to social media trends, our students will have meaningful conversations with potential for significant impact on the state. If you are interested in presenting at a future ROCH event, check back when the application cycle opens in October 2024.

Why did European and American immigrants come to Castle Country and what kind of lives did they create? How do these lives relate to the larger story of The American Dream? Come listen to stories of immigrants who built the community we have today.
