DESCRIPTION: The Intermountain Growth Summit (IGS) is the premiere forum for small- to medium-size enterprises (SMEs) that represent 99.9% of all businesses in the Intermountain West. A Time to Die: Adoption of Physician-Assisted Dying in Utah

Physician-assisted dying is legal in at least ten U.S. states and the District of Columbia under legislation known as Death with Dignity Laws. Should Utah also offer the option? Join a online panel discussion led by USU bioethicist Andy Anderson; Pat Sadoski, senior care consultant and retired hospice nurse; and family physician and hospice medical director Matthew Welter. Presenting: "Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 studied using a Novel Multiplex ELISA Platform"
A novel multiplex platform for enzyme linked immunoassay (ELISA) has been used to study seroprevalence of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in community populations. The assay detects antibodies to Spike 1, Spike 2, and Nucleocapsid epitopes on the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The relative levels of these antibodies, accompanied by a questionnaire, can indicate status of vaccination or prior infection. This platform is being used by University of Minnesota, Minnesota Health Department, and the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at University of Chicago to examine seroprevalence of antibodies to COVID-19 in Minnesota.

2021 Leonard J. Arrington Mormon History Lecture Series

Dr. Laurie Maffly-Kipp will present “A Marvelous Work: Reading Mormonism in West Africa” as part of the USU University Libraries’ Leonard J. Arrington Mormon History Lecture series. Maffly-Kipp’s lecture will discuss how the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pamphlets, books and other church materials circulated in West Africa two decades before offical missionary work began, leading to a unique “native” Mormonism. Believers crafted churches from these bare materials and doctrinal interpretations during the 1960s and 1970s.
The lecture will be held at the Newel & Jean Daines Concert Hall at 7 p.m. and will also be broadcasted live at youtube.com/USULibraries. It is free and open to the public.

“’A Marvelous Work’: Reading Mormonism in West Africa”
Two decades before the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began official missionary work in West Africa, pamphlets, books, and other church materials had been circulating among Christians in Nigeria and Ghana. Brought by seekers who had studied abroad or encountered church members from other countries, those texts formed the basis for a Mormon community outside the bounds of U.S. institutional authority or oversight. What did this “native” Mormonism look like, and how did believers craft churches out of the bare materials of tracts and inspirational volumes? This talk explores the circulation and interpretation of this homegrown Mormon faith in the 1960s and 1970s, and concludes with the dilemmas raised by this religious self-fashioning for LDS Church establishment after 1978.

Jean Lowe humorously explores the ironies and challenges of our 21st-century culture, including consumerism and commercialism, in the exhibition "Your Place in the Multiverse: Jean Lowe." Many of the artworks—including furniture, food products, and even a piano—are created from papier-mâché.
Come see the exhibition, get and inspired, and make your own papier-mâché food like Jean Lowe and fool your friends with a convincing looking donut!

Fry Street Quartet Concert

The first Fry Street Quartet concert of the semester includes a world premiere by Brazilian-American composer Clarice Assad. A prolific Grammy-nominated composer with over 70 works to her credit, Clarice Assad’s numerous commissions include works for Carnegie Hall, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Orquestra Sinfônica de São Paulo, Chicago Sinfonietta, San Jose Chamber Orchestra, the Boston Youth Orchestra, General Electric, Sybarite5, Metropolis ensemble, the Bravo! Vail Music Festival, Queen Reef Music Festival and the La Jolla Music Festival, to name a few. Her work Danças Nativas was nominated for a Latin Grammy for best contemporary composition in 2009. Her compositions have been recorded by some of the most prominent names in the classical music, including percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, and oboist Liang Wang.

The Biological Engineering Dept. is pleased to welcome Dr. Dolly Casper from Thermo Fisher Scientific. She will be presenting:
"Life After Undergrad: a brief overview of Academia, Entrepreneurship, and Industry"
Dr. Casper graduated from Utah State University and the University of Utah in Bioengineering and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the area of tissue engineering. Since then she has worked as a medical device consultant, formalized a company to develop her tendon recombination device invention, and currently works in industry for Thermo Fisher Scientific. Through this, Dr. Casper has gained insight into Academia, Entrepreneurship, and Industry and the many opportunities for students.

Marked man Julius Caesar is celebrated by the commoners of Rome for his battlefield victories, but Caius Cassius, Marcus Brutus, and others higher on the political ladder worry he may hold too much power. On a dark and ominous night, they hatch a plot to assassinate Caesar for the good of the republic. His close friend, Mark Antony, is spared and is able to turn the mob of mourners at Caesar’s funeral against the assassins. Informed Citizen Series with NYT's Jonathan Martin
Conference/Seminar
Join the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Institute of Government and Politics in welcoming Jonathan Martin, the national political correspondent for the New York Times. Jonathan is an accomplished journalist and has appeared often on television and radio as a political analyst and commentator. The discussion will be moderated by the Michael Kennedy, Vice President for global relations and public policy at VMware.
Let Her Light Shine: Memorial Walk for Lauren McCluskey
Special Event
On the third anniversary of Lauren McCluskey's death, Utah State University will host a memorial walk at the Ralph Maughan Track Stadium. This event will be to honor the incredible Lauren McCluskey as well as raise awareness about relationship violence and important resources.
Participants will be encouraged to sign Lauren's Promise, a pledge to believe victims of threatening behavior.
We will begin our walk at the track field, following keynote speakers, and will end our walk at the South entrance of Maverik Stadium prior to the USU Football Homecoming Game.

Wilderness First Aid Course
Workshop/Training
The Wilderness First Aid course is a great introduction to wilderness medicine and basic life support skills. It is perfect for the outdoor enthusiast who wants more than an urban first aid course provides. The emphasis of the class is on recognizing and treating life-threatening traumatic and medical emergencies, common wilderness injuries, bandaging and splinting, and environmental injuries. CPR is included in the curriculum.
This course is taught in partnership with DesertMountainMedicine.
MWC-Evans Writers' Workshop for Auto/Biography, Memoir, and Family History

Have you ever thought about writing biography, autobiography, memoir or family history? Did you ever take a creative writing class that inspired you? Or do you have a start on a project but need some additional inspiration or maybe a nudge to take it from concept to composition? Writers of all expertise levels are invited to a Writer’s Workshop for Auto/Biography on Saturday, October 23rd from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Utah State University - Salt Lake Center in Taylorsville. This event is being hosted by the Mountain West Center at Utah State University in connection with the Evans Biography Awards. The parade route runs along Main Street from Center Street to 800 North in Logan.
Aggie Music Fest

The USU Veterans Resource Office (VRO) invites the public to the Aggie Music Fest on Saturday, October 23 at the Blue Square Apartments in Logan. The event will feature live music and free hot chocolate samples from the Aggie Chocolate Factory.
The event is free, but $5 donations are welcome and encouraged. Those interested in donating may do so in person or visit https://www.usu.edu/adayofgiving/veterans. Proceeds support services for student veterans, including the tutoring program and technology upgrades for the VRO student lounge. Come enjoy the musical talents of Justin Warnick, Tori Smith, Two Headed Trout, Ari and the Bandidos, Sky Olson and Kooper. We hope to see you there!

An eagerly awaited tradition around the Music Department is our series of monthly jam sessions, in which a guest artist (or two or three) from outside Cache Valley visits to perform jazz standards with USU students and community members in a relaxed environment. Come and sit in on a tune, or just sit back, relax, and enjoy the music. Jam sessions are completely unscripted, so you never know what exactly will happen, but it’s great fun watching musicians perform without a net!

In this virtual seminar, Sally Helgesen draws on her work with legendary executive coach Marshall Goldsmith to help women identify and address the habits most likely to get in their way as they seek to move to a higher level. Inquiring minds of all ages are invited to Science Unwrapped, the public outreach program of USU's College of Science. Featured speaker is USU evolutionary ecologist Norah Saarman, who presents "Making Use of the Great and Small: Tracking Disease-Carrying Mosquitoes with Satellites and Genetics" at 7 pm in the Emert Auditorium (ESLC 130) of the Eccles Science Learning Center on USU's Logan campus. Admission is free. Dr. Saarman's talk will be recorded and posted on Science Unwrapped's website following the talk: www.usu.edu/science/unwrapped

Muses: A Museum Theatre Experience

Muses: A Museum Theatre Experience is a USU student project created by Megan Codling and Elise Willmore, both Theatre Education majors with a minor in History, and will be performed by Bailee Miner and Madison Rowley.
The project was inspired by the NEHMA exhibition "Women, Surrealism, and Abstraction," which features work from female artists that have been overlooked in art history. Muses will culminate in a performance with Madison Rowley creating a live painting in front of the audience as Bailee Miner performs a long-form poem that explores the role of women in art history.
