VASS Lecture - Gabriela Lena Frank, Visiting Composer-In-Residence
Arts/Entertainment
A conversation with Gabriela Lena Frank about the Arts, Humanity, and bringing artistic voice to the critical issues we face…
Humanity is now wholly enveloped in a suite of fully entangled ecological and social crises, all emergent from the same underlying systems. We understand the source of these crises, and possess the resources and scientific knowledge to change course. What remains elusive is a cultural framework from which a path can be forged through this landscape. Consequently is our cultural institutions that hold the key. Please join Dr. Robert Davies for a conversation with renowned composer Gabriela Lena Frank about climate, culture, and bringing artistic voice to bear on the great challenges of our time.
Utah State Theatre: Getting Near to Baby
Arts/Entertainment
Twelve-year-old Willa Jo Dean and 7-year-old Little Sister Dean are reeling from the death of their baby sister, Baby. Little Sister's torment is so profound that she stopped talking. The girls have come to stay with Aunt Patty so that their mom can recover, but Aunt Patty is unused to the messy human ways of little girls and finds Little Sister's silence intolerable. Aunt Patty's rules and regulations finally drive the sisters to the roof, where they hope to escape her laws while at the same time getting nearer to their departed baby sister. Getting Near to Baby is a Y York adaptation of the book by Audrey Couloumbis.
A pre-show panel will be held on Thurs. March 3rd at 6:15p in FAV room 262.

USU Guitar, Bass, and Drums Festival
Arts/Entertainment
This year’s festival will feature the Mike Stern Band with Edmond Gilmore (bass), Danny Walsh (sax), Cliff Almond (drums), and Leni Stern (guitar). One of the great jazz guitarists of his generation, Mike Stern has the unique ability to play with the finesse and lyricism of Jim Hall, the driving swing of Wes Montgomery and the turbulent, overdriven attack of Jimi Hendrix. Growing up in the Washington, D.C. area, Stern revered all three of those guitar immortals, along with such potent blues guitarists as Albert and B.B. King. Aspects of those seminal influences can be heard in his playing on the 18 recordings he has released as a leader or in his acclaimed sideman work for Miles Davis, Billy Cobham, the Brecker Brothers, Jaco Pastorius, Steps Ahead, David Sanborn, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Joe Henderson and the all-star Four Generations of Miles band.

Melissa Aldana Quartet
Arts/Entertainment
GRAMMY-nominated saxophonist and composer Melissa Aldana joins the Blue Note Records family with the release of 12 Stars, her debut album as a leader for the legendary Jazz label. At 33, the Brooklyn-based tenor player from Santiago, Chile has garnered international recognition for her visionary work as a band leader, as well as her deeply meditative interpretation of language and vocabulary.
12 Stars grapples with concepts of childrearing, familial forgiveness, acceptance, and self-love. “This is a really important album for me,” says Aldana. “I felt like I had so much to say because of all the experiences I had during 2020. After the personal process I went through last year, I feel more connected to myself and my own imperfections — and I’ve discovered that it’s the same process with music. Embracing everything I hear, everything I play — even mistakes — is more meaningful than perfection.”
Just before the lockdown, Aldana went through personal struggles with the end of a relationship. Alone in Harlem, she told herself she’d be busy for years, with plenty of distractions from dealing with her complex emotional response. “But then,” she says, “the pandemic hit, and I hit bottom.” She needed to make changes, so she turned inward. “Because of that personal process, I feel even more connected to my music.” Even the way she practiced changed, allowing her to explore new concepts and endure discomfort.

Jazz Jam
Arts/Entertainment
An eagerly awaited tradition around the Music Department is our series of monthly jam sessions, in which a guest artist (or two or three) from outside Cache Valley visits to perform jazz standards with USU students and community members in a relaxed environment. Come and sit in on a tune, or just sit back, relax, and enjoy the music. Jam sessions are completely unscripted, so you never know what exactly will happen, but it’s great fun watching musicians perform without a net!
