Chemistry Seminar Series: Michael Trakselis
Conference/Seminar
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry presents "Dynamic Regulation of Replisome Progression" with Michael Trakselis, professor at Baylor University. Hosted by Sean Johnson. Projects in the Trakselis laboratory center on understanding the molecular mechanisms of DNA replication and repair and exploiting this knowledge for cancer therapeutics, biotechnology, and nanoscale applications. The lab utilizes a model archaeal DNA replication system which shares significant homology to that of higher eukaryotes but is amenable to in vitro biochemistry experiments. This allows them to draw parallels between different domains of life using simpler replication systems. Additionally, they utilize cellular biology approaches in human cells to investigate the roles of various enzymes in double strand break repair. In this vain, they utilize molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, cell biology and biophysical methods to probe this area of research.

Sam's doctoral and postdoctoral research focused on the mechanism of nucleic acid targeting by RNA-guided bacterial immune systems (CRISPR–Cas), especially CRISPR–Cas9, and on the development of these systems for genome engineering applications. More recently, his lab pioneered the discovery of CRISPR-associated transposons and their development for new methods of RNA-guided DNA integration. His lab employs a range of biochemical, biophysical, genetic, and structural techniques to investigate CRISPR and transposon biology, with an eye towards applying mechanistic knowledge for tool development.
