Honors Book Lab Registration: Heart Berries
Lecture/Readings | Learning Circles
Registration is now open for an Honors Book Lab that will be held in-person on the Uintah Basin campus. Honors Book Labs are faculty-led ungraded book groups that engage 4-5 students in cross-disciplinary conversation, sponsored by the Utah State University Honors Program. Students do not have to be currently enrolled in Honors to participate. This Honors Book Lab will meet weekly on Tuesdays from 6:00-7:00 p.m. between January 16 and February 6. Participating students will receive a copy of Heart Berries by Terese Marie Mailhot. Synopsis: Mailhot writes with a unique and unsettling voice as she recounts a troubled childhood, a tumultuous early motherhood, and her own mental health and identity in adulthood. Having survived a profoundly dysfunctional upbringing only to find herself hospitalized and facing a dual diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder and bipolar II disorder, Mailhot writes her way out of trauma while simultaneously writing a memorial to her mother, a reconciliation with her father, and an elegy on the complexities of loving someone beneath the burden of shame. In finding her own voice, Mailhot shows us how to seize control of our own stories.
