Wassermann Piano Series, Young Artist: Dominic Doutney

Dominic Doutney is a rising young concert pianist, born in Britain and currently based in Chicago. He will present a program of Brahms, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff at Utah State University in advance of his Kennedy Center debut next month.

Dominic has made appearances on BBC Radio 3, CNBC, and recently performed an all-Rachmaninoff recital on Portugal’s biggest classical music radio station, Antena 2.

PACS Info Session - Fall 2024
Information/Orientation
PACS Group, Inc (PACS) is a holding company whose subsidiaries comprise both skilled nursing and assisted living facilities across the nation. Given our significant and ongoing growth, we are looking for college grads to join our Administrator-in-Training and Executive Director-in-Training programs. The AIT program enables individuals to become licensed administrators so that they can manage a PACS Skilled Nursing facility after their training. The EDIT program enables individuals to become licensed Executive Directors so they can manage PACS assisted living facilities. The AIT program is a paid, 6-9-month mentorship-based experience that provides direct, consistent training and coaching from a variety of facility leaders, caregivers, and specialists. Licensed administrators are paid a base salary along with a bonus that is based on the financial performance of that administrator’s facility. Consequently, compensation for a career in healthcare administration with PACS is extremely competitive with steep financial upside in the hundreds of thousands. The EDIT program is a paid, 3-4 month program that also functions as a mentorship-based experience that provides direct, consistent training and coaching from a variety of facility leaders, caregivers, and specialists. Licensed executive directors are also paid a base salary along with a bonus based on the financial performance of the building. Potential candidates need to be entrepreneurial, driven, outgoing, organized, and creative. Join us to learn more about PACS on Wednesday, October 2nd! Refreshments will be provided.

We will briefly discuss the process students must follow when submitting an academic record adjustment. This petition provides students the opportunity to request changes to their academic transcript (credit adjustment, course addition, withdrawal with "W" notation, etc.) because of an extenuating circumstance. An extenuating circumstance is a non-academic emergency outside of the student’s control that occurred during the semester for which the student is petitioning and affected the student’s ability to attend or fully participate in classes.

Canvas has an integrated digital badging tool called Canvas Credentials (previously called Badgr). This workshop addresses how to create, award, and track digital badges.

USU Be Well and Aetna, USU's Employee Assistance Program present a lunch and learn on supporting family members with mental health issues. Do you have a family member with a mental health problem? What can you do to support them but also take care of yourself? This training is not designed to provide specific diagnostic information or help identify mental health issues but it will give participants tools to cope with the strain of helping a loved one with mental illness. We’ll discuss the definition of mental illness, the impact of mental illness on families, tips to support others, ways to cope with a mental health crisis, and tools for self-care. *Presentation will not be recorded. Olsen Lecture Series: Nanoscience Pioneer Gregory Hartland

University of Notre Dame chemist Gregory Hartland is pioneering use of optics to examine properties of single plasmonic nanostructures. His research includes development of novel techniques to perform time-resolved and steady state spectroscopy experiments on single particles. He will present “Ultrafast Spectroscopy of Single Plasmonic Nanostructures" as featured speaker for the Utah State University Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry’s 2024 Richard Olsen Lecture series. All are welcome to his talk at 4 p.m. Oct. 9, in the Eccles Science Learning Center, Room ESLC 046, on the Logan campus. Hartland is a Notre Dame Collegiate Professor and director of graduate studies in Notre Dame’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He served as senior editor of the American Chemical Society’s Journal of Physical Chemistry, and was recently named deputy editor of the society’s Journal of Physical Chemistry C. Harland is an ACS Fellow, a Royal Society of Chemistry Fellow and an American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow. The Olsen Lecture Series was established by in 2006 by the late USU Emeritus Professor Richard Olsen and his wife, LiVina Hymas Olsen.

October 12 (at NEHMA): Voyager in Space In 1951, while walking among the redwood groves in Northern California, Gordon Onslow Ford had the sudden insight that the line, the circle, and the dot were at the root of all art. Through study of calligraphy with Zen master Hodo Tobase, the artist also learned that they were the fastest lines one could make. Join us in creating artwork inspired by Voyager in Space by Gordon Onslow-Ford.

The Caine College of the Arts presents the Utah State University Symphony Orchestra's first concert of the 2024-25 season on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. in the Daines Concert Hall.
The concert, titled "Home Is Where the Heart Is," will be conducted by the USU Symphony Orchestra's new conductor, Daniel Alfred Wachs. It will feature members of the Department of Music wind and brass faculty in an all-American program, including Samuel Barber's haunting "Knoxville: Summer of 1915," performed by guest artist and Metropolitan Opera star soprano Janai Brugger. Also featured will be Aaron Copland's iconic "Appalachian Spring" in its version for full orchestra.
"It is a thrill and an honor for me to be joining the Caine College of the Arts faculty," Wachs says. He comes to Logan from Vienna, Austria. "There is so much talent between my faculty colleagues and our incredible students that I was inspired to find a way to present both. This all-American program of 20th-century composers also allows me to honor educators, including two of my own, Otto-Werner Mueller and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Jennifer Higdon."

Hope is the mindset that drives resilient behaviors in everyone, including women. Hope is the expectation we have that we can identify pathways and generate the agency to attain desired goals. Research shows that hope is a psychological strength that can be nurtured and is one of the protective factors to our well-being.
This presentation and discussion with Dr. Chan Hellman—a professor of social work at the University of Oklahoma – Tulsa, the Executive Director of the Hope Research Center, and the author of Hope Rising—will introduce the science and power of hope, how trauma and adversity impact hope, and practical strategies for building resilience in individuals and communities. Dr. Hellman’s almost 20 years of research at the Hope Research Center demonstrating hope as a protective factor for children and families experiencing adversity and trauma, will be the basis for his presentation. He discovered that hope can be taught and nurtured in children and adults who are facing all types of challenges. We all need more hope in today’s world. We are heading down south near Moab to spend a long weekend rock climbing the beautiful sandstone desert walls. At night we will relax at the campground and enjoy the evenings by the fire. Trip cost includes sales tax, food, transportation, climbing equipment, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent and student leadership.

Keynote Lecture, Symposium: Rethinking Gustav Holst and his Music

Presented by Dr. Nalini Ghuman, Professor of Musicology, Mills College at Northeastern University.
2024 marks the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the birth of the British composer Gustav Holst. Although his music remains an enduring fixture of the orchestral and wind band canons, scholarship about the composer is rare. One factor contributing to this situation is the outsized influence Imogen Holst’s scholarship plays on our understanding of her father and his music. Her biographical and analytical works remain in print nearly forty years after her death, and despite the works of subsequent biographers such as Michael Short, Alan Gibbs, and Jon Mitchell, the narratives she established remain largely unquestioned. While important work over the last thirty years from Raymond Head, Nalini Ghuman, and others begins to rethink both the historiographical and epistemological frames with which we understand the composer, further work remains to be done to address the complexities and contradictions inherent in Holst and his music.

Spooky Pup Fest is a fundraiser for Cache Humane Society organized by USU honors students. The event features a doggy costume contest and parade, a photo booth, pumpkin patch, food trucks, music, games, and other pet-themed vendors. Prodigy, a local family-friendly brewery, will host a Beer Garden. The event will be held October 19 from noon-6:00 pm at the Cache County Fairgrounds. Tickets can be purchased through the Cache Humane Society Venmo account or at the door.

Fall Break Moab Mountain Biking

We are heading down south to hike and bike the world renown desert red rock in the Moab area. We will spend the weekend exploring some of the amazing mountain biking trails while camping near Moab. Participants must be in good physical condition and prepared for moderate to strenuous biking in a desert environment. No prior experience necessary, beginners are most welcome. Participants are encouraged to bring their own mountain bike (in good working condition) or a rental is available from the OP for no additional cost. Sizes and quantities are limited. Trip cost includes sales tax, mountain bike (if needed), food, transportation, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent and student leadership.

I have spent much of my career thinking about diet breadth and host shifts in herbivorous insects, especially in Lycaeides butterflies. In recent years, more of my attention has gone to questions of global change and monitoring butterflies at long term study sites that we maintain in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.” There will be a catered social in the BNR Atrium (just outside BNR 102) following Wednesday’s seminar on October 23 at 5:00 pm. While most people first learned of the creature known as Slender Man in 2014 in the wake of a gruesome attempted murder in Waukesha, Wisconsin, many fans and creators of the online genre known as "creepypasta" had already been familiar with him for years. Blending the tropes of folk legend and literary horror, creepypasta is a collaborative, hybrid genre that provides an entirely new outlet for scaring ourselves silly. This talk will consider the role that the internet has played in reshaping folklore and folk belief, and will examine several examples of contemporary online horror that illustrate the ways in which folklore continues as a symbolic barometer for society's anxieties and fears in the digital age.

NEHMA highlights this tradition by creating a large ofrenda (offering table) in the lobby of the museum. On display are calaveras (decorated skulls), photos, food, candles, and marigold flowers to represent different kinds of ofrendas. People are welcome to dedicate a small portion of that ofrenda to someone they lost by writing their name on the ofrenda wall. Iwasa says "her broad goal is to create accurate and compelling molecular and cellular visualizations that will support research, learning and scientific communication." It's time for our annual firewood cut! Every year we go up the school forest to cut firewood to sell as a fundraiser and teach you all how the basics of using chainsaws. We will be cutting firewood October 26. We will be meeting at 7:45 a.m. in the NR parking lot!
You need to bring: closed toe shoes (sturdy boots are suggested) - this is required to use a chainsaw, a long sleeve shirt - also required, work gloves if you have them, layers for the cold, and snacks + water

Hansen Life Sciences Retreat

USU's 2024 Hansen Life Sciences Retreat is open to all USU undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, faculty and staff, from varied disciplines, involved in the study of biological processes at the molecular level. The Friday evening, Oct. 25 keynote retreat speaker is University of Utah biochemist and data visualization expert Janet Iwasa, who says “her broad goal is to create accurate and compelling molecular and cellular visualizations that will support research, learning and scientific communication.” She speaks at 5 pm in ESLC 130 on USU's Logan campus. The retreat continues Saturday, Oct. 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with research presentations, a poster session and career networking, at the Larry W. and Lindi Miller Champion’s Club at West Stadium Center of the Maverick Stadium, 880 E. 1000 North, on USU’s Logan Campus. Registration for the full retreat (Friday and Saturday) is $20 per person, and includes appetizers on Friday; breakfast and lunch on Saturday and a retreat shirt. Day of the Dead Ofrenda at NEHMA

Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a celebration of life and death that connects family members and allows many to grow closer with their loved ones. NEHMA highlights this tradition by creating a large ofrenda (offering table) in the lobby of the museum. On display are calaveras (decorated skulls), photos, food, candles, and marigold flowers to represent different kinds of ofrendas. People are welcome to dedicate a small portion of that ofrenda to someone they lost by writing their name on the ofrenda wall. Come visit the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art and our Día de Los Muertos ofrenda!
Cybersecurity Awareness Month - Scavenger Hunt

Come learn how to "Secure your World"!
October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and this year’s theme is “Secure Our World.” There are four key areas that individuals can focus on to "Secure Their World": 1) Enable Multifactor Authentication, 2) Use a Password Manager, 3) Apply Patches, and 4) Activate "Find My Device."
We will have four tables across campus, each focused on one of these security priorities. Since Halloween is the next day, we’ve chosen the theme: “Don’t Get Tricked, Get a Treat! – Secure Your World.” Each table will provide treats along with information on one of the four priorities.
Scavenger hunt! participants will collect stamps at each table after learning about the security tip. Those who collect all four stamps can head to Old Main to claim a prize!

Come learn about the exciting world of CNC machining! This workshop is designed to introduce you to CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) by preparing a part for CNC milling.

- Planning a CNC operation
- Setting up job stock and work coordinates suitable for fixturing
- Understanding different toolpaths and their applications
- Choosing appropriate cutting tools

Debussy: String Quartet in G Minor, Op. 10
Claude Debussy’s String Quartet in G Minor, Op. 10, a cornerstone of the chamber music repertoire, will close our October concert with its impressionistic textures and vivid harmonic language. This quartet, with its shimmering colors and dynamic interplay, provides a striking contrast to the other works on the program, capturing the visceral beauty and emotional depth that Debussy is renowned for.
Night Fire by Akshaya Tucker
"Night Fire," a work for string quartet and tenor by Akshaya Tucker, was also written for the Fry Street Quartet and premiered last spring in the NOVA series in Salt Lake City. Another work created in partnership with GLFCAM’s "Composing Earth" project, Tucker’s composition, with its vivid textures and poignant text by Wren Brian, confronts us with the terror of escaping a wildfire. The FSQ is joined by tenor Thomas Glenn for this performance.
Bartók: Sonata No. 1 for Violin and Piano
Bartók’s Sonata No. 1 for Violin and Piano, a work of intense energy and rhythmic drive, showcases the composer’s deep connection to the folk traditions of Eastern Europe. Violinist Robert Waters and pianist Jason Hardink will bring this electrifying piece to life, capturing the fiery spirit and intricate dialogues between the two instruments.

Lake Powell Kayaking

We are heading down south to the amazing red rock and blue waters of Lake Powell to explore some of its many side canyons in sea kayaks. We will pack our kayaks with our gear and spend two nights camping on the lake. Participants must be able to swim and comfortable in open water. Trip cost includes sales tax, food, transportation, kayak equipment, tent, sleeping bag, pad and student leadership.

Provide free leaf-raking and snow-shoveling services for senior citizens and community members with disabilities. Register yourself, your roommates/household, or your organization to be volunteers! After registering, you will be matched with a resident who has requested help. If you feel like raking leaves, we're expecting you to find a group who can assist you (unless you like raking by yourself). The COSAS has rakes for check out in TSC 316A. If you feel like shoveling snow, you're signing up for a commitment to a resident for the duration of the snowy season. Legacy of Val Day of Service: Whittier Community Center Carnival

Help us honor the legacy of Val Christensen by assisting at the oldest community Halloween carnival in the valley! We will be in charge of a glow stick dance area at the Whittier Community Center's annual free carnival for kids. Volunteers in the morning can help set up the stage, and volunteers in the afternoon will hand out glow sticks, manage music, and dance with kids as they come and go from the stage. No optional carpool for this opportunity (the community center is very close to campus).
