AIARE II Avalanche Course

The AIARE 2 is a three-day/24-hour course that provides backcountry travelers an opportunity to advance their decision making skills in more complicated situations such as being a leader within a small travel group, traveling in more complicated terrain, and/or developing a travel plan where online resources are scarce. The AIARE 2 builds on the introductory avalanche hazard management model introduced in the AIARE 1 and adds to it the evaluation of critical hazard assessment factors. Students will describe and discuss weather, snowpack and avalanche processes, and identify how these processes relate to observations and travel within avalanche terrain. Skis or splitboard with skins and touring bindings are required for this course. SNOWSHOES ARE NOT ALLOWED! Additionally, an avalanche beacon, shovel, and probe are required. These items are available to rent from the USU Outdoor Programs. Make sure to reserve equipment in advance as quantities are limited. Participants must be comfortable traveling in blue to black resort terrain on skis or splitboard. This course is not recommended for beginners.
Spidey Sweat Challenge

Come do a workout inspired by the upcoming new Spidey movie! We’ve looked up the actor’s workout and we now challenge you to a fun spidey sweat challenge with one of the instructors and trainer! The event is free for all and all skill levels are welcome! It'll be from 6:30-8pm on February 1st. Register before hand or show up the day of.

Backcountry Ski Basics

Come learn the basics of backcountry skiing/boarding with us! We’ll spend an evening in the classroom covering how to use alpine touring equipment/splitboard to get up and down the mountain, the basics of avalanche safety equipment, how to locate and interpret an avalanche danger forecast, and route planning. The following day we’ll head out into the Bear River mountains for a full day on our touring equipment. In addition to getting some backcountry turns, we’ll cover the basics of avalanche rescue, snowpack evaluation, and terrain management. This trip is geared toward resort skiers/boarders who want to learn how to venture into the backcountry safely. No backcountry experience is required but you must be comfortable riding black diamond terrain. Participants must be prepared for strenuous hiking and a full day in winter conditions, snow or shine. Backcountry touring skis or splitboard with skins are required and available to rent for an additional $10+ tax for this trip. NO SNOWSHOES. Trip cost includes transportation, avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe, and student leadership.
Tune n' Wax Clinic

Top Rope Nights at the Climbing Wall

Join us at the Climbing Wall at the Aggie Recreation Center for our Top Rope Nights every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month. This free event is set to take place from 7 to 9 pm, offering a unique and exhilarating experience for climbers of all levels. Indulge in the excitement of scaling vertical walls, all while securely fastened to a top rope for a safe and enjoyable climbing session. Our skilled instructors will be on hand to provide guidance and encouragement, ensuring that both seasoned climbers and first-timers can make the most of the experience.
Beginner Backcountry Ski Tour with Backcountry Squatters (female/non-binary)

Come grab some backcountry turns with us! We will venture into the Bear River backcountry to seek out snow that you can't get to on a ski lift. Learn some of the basics of backcountry travel and safety. No backcountry experience is required but you must be comfortable riding double blue to black diamond resort terrain. Participants must be prepared for strenuous hiking. This trip is specific for female & non-binary folks, partnering with Backcountry Squatters. Backcountry touring skis or splitboard with skins are required and available to rent for an additional $10+tax for trip participants. NO SNOWSHOES. Trip cost includes transportation, avalanche beacon, shovel, probe and student leadership.

Valentine's Day Zumba and High Fitness

Grab your gals, your significant other, or just yourself, and join us for our Valentine's Day Zumba and High Fitness classes - on you guessed it, Valentine's Day! Zumba will run from 5:30-6:30 pm and High Fitness will run from 7-8 pm, both in the MAC gym at the ARC. Registration gets you into both classes and is free with a group fitness pass or $5 without, register on recportal.usu.edu.
How to Train for a Triathlon

Get prepared for our upcoming Aggie Triathlon in April (or for any other!) with our How to Train for a Triathlon workshop! It'll be held on February 15th from 6-7 pm, allowing you enough time to implement what we'll be teaching. The best part? This is a free workshop! Registration opens on Feb. 1st at recportal.usu.edu.

Some backcountry experience is recommended and participants must be expert/advanced riders (able to comfortably ride black diamond western resort terrain). Participants must be in good physical condition and prepared for strenuous uphill hiking. Winter backcountry travel equipment(Alpine Touring, Telemark, Splitboard) are required and available to rent from the OP for a nominal fee. NO SNOWSHOES. All participants must abide by OP and University Policies.

Full Moon Snowshoe Hike

Come spend an evening snowshoeing under the glow of a full moon. Be sure to dress warm for the cooler temperatures after dark. No snowshoeing experience is necessary, beginners are most welcome. Participants must be prepared for moderate physical activity in a winter environment. Trip cost includes snowshoe rental and transportation. Pre-Trip Meeting: NA (You will be contacted by OP trip leaders 24 hours before the hike with trip details and logistics) All participants must have health insurance and abide by OP and University Policies.

Join Campus Recreation and leap above the competition with our Leap Higher: Boulder Competition on February 26th. It's free to compete, simply register at the ARC Climbing Wall (spots will go fast!). All skill levels are welcome. The first heat starts at 12pm with the finals starting around 7pm. Spectators are welcome to come and watch!

Will you join the 250, 500, 750, 1000, or 1200lb club? Our fitness staff records your max bench press, squat, and deadlift. Based on your total of all 3, you join the 250, 500, 750, 1000, or 1200lb club! And get a t-shirt to prove it. The Big 3 Challenge will run for two weeks from Feb. 27-29 and March 4-7 in the Fieldhouse. Open lift will be offered each day from 6:00pm to 8:00pm where fitness staff members will be available to sign participants in, spot, and judge lifts. Each participant should warm-up on their own time and will let a fitness staff member know when they are ready to max on whichever lift. Three (3) attempts will be given to each individual for their maximum squat, deadlift, and bench. Any attempt spotted or watched by a fitness staff member will count whether it is a completed or failed lift. Lifts will be recorded immediately after each attempt. Lift attempts may be completed in any order, on any day of the challenge. Lifts may not be completed outside of the ‘open lift’ times. Upon completion of the challenge, participants will ‘sign out’ and provide a shirt size for whichever ‘club’ their 3 lifts total to. 3 lifts, 3 attempts, t-shirt guaranteed!

Let's go cross-country skiing! Come spend a few hours gliding on snow up Logan Canyon. We will explore one of the many cross-country ski-friendly areas in our big campus backyard. Trip cost includes cross-country equipment rental, transportation and student leadership.
