Prof. Irshad Manji and Gov. Spencer Cox will join USU President Cantwell for the first President's Forum on Conflict and Conflict Resolution. They will startwa conversation about how the Utah State community can “disagree better” and learn to have productive and meaningful conversations across ideological divides. Following the conversation, Prof. Manji will deliver a keynote presentation. Prof. Manji is the founder of the award-winning Moral Courage Project, which equips schools and businesses worldwide to turn heated issues into healthy relationships and innovative teamwork.

Dialogues on Economic Growth & Sustainability

A partnership of USU's Quinney College of Natural Resources Department of Watershed Sciences and Department of Environment and Society, the Huntsman School of Business Department of Economics and Finance, the College of Humanities and Social Science's Community and Natural Resources Institute, and the President's Office.

Oil and natural gas, wood products, minerals and other resources from the earth have fueled historic growth throughout the world, generated jobs and offered communities a wealth of economic activity. Modern life is literally built on these resources, and continues to rely on them for its upward economic trajectory. But resources have finite limits and our resources and economic activities interact in very complex ways. This symposium is designed to enable the USU community explore these cross-disciplinary topics, with the goal of building a compelling vision for a way that economics and environmental sustainability can co-evolve.

Artist St. Clair Detrick-Jules will discuss what she learned through an almost four-year-long journey photographing and interviewing 101 Black women with natural hair for her photojournalism book, My Beautiful Black Hair: 101 Natural Hair Stories from the Sisterhood, a large-scale visual anthropology exploring the deep, complex relationships across generations between Black women and their hair that Kirkus Reviews calls “compelling and inspirational...a powerful celebration of self-acceptance and sisterhood.”

Beginner Backcountry Ski Tour with Backcountry Squatters (female/non-binary)

Recreation

Come grab some backcountry turns with us! We will venture into the Bear River backcountry to seek out snow that you can't get to on a ski lift. Learn some of the basics of backcountry travel and safety. No backcountry experience is required but you must be comfortable riding double blue to black diamond resort terrain. Participants must be prepared for strenuous hiking. This trip is specific for female & non-binary folks, partnering with Backcountry Squatters. Backcountry touring skis or splitboard with skins are required and available to rent for an additional $10+tax for trip participants. NO SNOWSHOES. Trip cost includes transportation, avalanche beacon, shovel, probe and student leadership.

Supersonic Aircraft Noise Mitigation: The concept of commercial supersonic flight is an idea previously thought of as science fiction. A major hurdle in making it a reality is mitigating the sonic boom to be quiet enough to fly over residential areas.
