Student Activities
For Graduate Students of the College of Science: Join us for the NIH-developed "Becoming a Resilient Scientist" video and discussion series. At each gathering, we'll discuss a video from the five-part "Becoming a Resilient Scientist" series. The Oct. 3 gathering will focus on the first video in the series, "An Introduction to Resilience & Wellness." Refreshments will be served. Held in the Haight Center on campus.
Science Unwrapped - Can We Live the Good Life and Keep Our Planet Healthy?

Inquiring minds of all ages are invited to Science Unwrapped, the public STEM outreach program of USU's College of Science. Watershed scientist Patrick Belmont, professor in USU's Department of Watershed Sciences, presents "Can We Live the Good Life and Keep Our Planet Healthy?" at 7 pm in the Emert Auditorium (ESLC 130) of the Eccles Science Learning Center on the USU campus, Logan. Admission is free. Refreshments and hands-on learning activities follow Dr. Belmont's talk. Talk Description: Watershed scientist Patrick Belmont explores how we can better align economics and sustainability to put us on track for improving quality of life for people, while protecting the ecosystems on which our economy depends. Drawing on collaborations he’s convened with scientists, land managers and entrepreneurs, Belmont illustrates how we can pool our knowledge and energy to create communities that can thrive in the ever changing social, cultural, and economic landscape. Dr. Belmont's talk is part of Science Unwrapped's Fall 2024 "Joining Forces" series.

Olsen Lecture Series: Nanoscience Pioneer Gregory Hartland
Lecture/Readings
University of Notre Dame chemist Gregory Hartland is pioneering use of optics to examine properties of single plasmonic nanostructures. His research includes development of novel techniques to perform time-resolved and steady state spectroscopy experiments on single particles. He will present “Ultrafast Spectroscopy of Single Plasmonic Nanostructures" as featured speaker for the Utah State University Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry’s 2024 Richard Olsen Lecture series. All are welcome to his talk at 4 p.m. Oct. 9, in the Eccles Science Learning Center, Room ESLC 046, on the Logan campus. Hartland is a Notre Dame Collegiate Professor and director of graduate studies in Notre Dame’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He served as senior editor of the American Chemical Society’s Journal of Physical Chemistry, and was recently named deputy editor of the society’s Journal of Physical Chemistry C. Harland is an ACS Fellow, a Royal Society of Chemistry Fellow and an American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow. The Olsen Lecture Series was established by in 2006 by the late USU Emeritus Professor Richard Olsen and his wife, LiVina Hymas Olsen.

Hansen Life Sciences Retreat Keynote Address: Janet Iwasa
Lecture/Readings
Janet Iwasa, PhD, biochemist and data visualization expert with the University of Utah's Department of Biochemistry and School of Medicine, is the keynote speaker for USU's 2024 Hansen Life Sciences Retreat. Iwasa says "her broad goal is to create accurate and compelling molecular and cellular visualizations that will support research, learning and scientific communication." Iwasa's talk is free and open to all.
Hansen Life Sciences Retreat

USU's 2024 Hansen Life Sciences Retreat is open to all USU undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, faculty and staff, from varied disciplines, involved in the study of biological processes at the molecular level. The Friday evening, Oct. 25 keynote retreat speaker is University of Utah biochemist and data visualization expert Janet Iwasa, who says “her broad goal is to create accurate and compelling molecular and cellular visualizations that will support research, learning and scientific communication.” She speaks at 5 pm in ESLC 130 on USU's Logan campus. The retreat continues Saturday, Oct. 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with research presentations, a poster session and career networking, at the Larry W. and Lindi Miller Champion’s Club at West Stadium Center of the Maverick Stadium, 880 E. 1000 North, on USU’s Logan Campus. Registration for the full retreat (Friday and Saturday) is $20 per person, and includes appetizers on Friday; breakfast and lunch on Saturday and a retreat shirt. Participants may submit a poster abstract, and should register and request their shirt size by Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2024. chem.usu.edu

Rapid Fire Research

FOUR MINUTES + FOUR SLIDES = YOUR BIG IDEA: During USU Science Week 2024, all USU undergraduates and grad students are invited to apply to participate in Rapid Fire Research, an opportunity to present your research idea in a fun, supportive, fast-paced environment. Participants sign up to make a four-minute presentation, using four slides, about their current research or a new research idea. All are welcome to attend. Participants should apply by Friday, Nov. 1, 2024, using the online form at usu.edu/science/events/rapid-research

Data scientist John Lawson, research assistant professor in USU's Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the Bingham Research Center at USU Uintah Basin, presents "A.I. is an Astounding Innovation, but Can We Trust It?" at 7 pm in the Emert Auditorium (ESLC 130) of the Eccles Science Learning Center on the USU campus, Logan. Talk Description: Artificial intelligence – AI – captures our imaginations with its rocketing innovation and surging accessibility. AI-generated text, video, images and voices seem like magic, yet can also be a wolf in sheep’s clothing with incorrect and misleading information. How do we harness this amazing tool, while curbing potential harm? Data scientist John Lawson, who uses AI to predict weather hazards, explores what it means, and the diverse skills, knowledge and precautions needed, to create trustworthy AI. Dr. Lawson's talk is part of Science Unwrapped's Fall 2024 "Joining Forces" series.

USU Physics November Demo Show

Inquiring minds of all ages are invited to the 2024 USU Physics November Demo Show. This year's theme is "The Physics of Phase Transitions." Admission is free! USU physicist James Coburn will offer exciting demonstrations of freezing, boiling, melting and condensing. Demos will include making liquid air, making solid air, crushing a 55-gallon drum and making an ice bomb! USU's Department of Physics is pleased to offer this super-fun learning event to the Cache Valley community.
